The album premiered on February 11th, 2016, at Madison Square Garden and was live-streamed at hundreds of theaters across the world and on TIDAL’s streaming service. It was released for download and streaming exclusively on TIDAL on February 14th, 2016, with Kanye announcing it wouldn’t be sold for a week after. However, Kanye later said the album would be a TIDAL exclusive and would never be sold, a move that pushed TIDAL to #1 on the App Store.

During an interview with The Breakfast Club, West described the album:

…this album’s just embracing the music, embracing joy, and being of service to the people. I just hope that people like it and enjoy it, you know? That’s it.

The title, which was derived from a lyric on “No More Parties In L.A.,” takes on many personas, referring to Pablo Picasso, an artist, Pablo Escobar, a notorious drug dealer, and Paul the Apostle, whose name is Pablo in Spanish.

The tracklist was initially revealed on January 25th, 2016, in its incomplete form, with updated versions being periodically sent out via various social media accounts. You can view the entire tracklist history here. Kanye called the album a “living breathing changing creative expression.”

On April 1st, 2016, the album was finally made available to stream on other streaming sites, such as Spotify and Apple Music. He also made it available to purchase directly from kanyewest.com.

The evolution of The Life of Pablo continues: two months after its Tidal release, and more than 400m streams later, Kanye West’s seventh album is now available from iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and other major services.

In a statement to the New York Times, the label Def Jam explained that a “newly updated, remixed and remastered version” of The Life of Pablo would be streaming on all major services from 1 April. It added that the album would continue to be edited by West: “In the months to come, Kanye will release new updates, new versions and new iterations of the album.”

The news, while great for fans without a Tidal account, does contradict previous comments made by the rapper. On 15 February, he told his followers:

The album’s official release – it is also available to download from his website for $20 (£14) – comes after West’s impressive Tidal streaming figures were made public earlier this week. Until now, the album has not been eligible for official chart placement. The US recording industry counts 1,500 streams as the equivalent of one album sale – which in the case of The Life of Pablo would equal about 267,000 albums.

West’s album was given a completely new method of release: the record was premiered at Madison Square Garden on 11 February before its was made available on Tidal three days later. Some tracks became available to stream on Spotify – I Love Kanye and Famous – but West has continued to change elements of the songs, adding a vocal by Frank Ocean, tweaking lyrics and adding more gospel vocals.
