Don't be fooled by the cartoon cover! While I didn't exactly come to this workbook knowing 'zero' Japanese myself, it wasn't many pages in before I'd already begun to build upon my knowledge of its vocabulary and grammar. I could see this being useful for students (self-taught or class-based) in junior high on up, provided you're not too embarrassed reading something that looks designed for children as a grown-ass man.

I cannot praise this book enough!!!
I love how it's set up and how it ensures that you understand the previous lesson before moving on to the next!
It also progressively allows you to learn to read Hirigana by teaching you a 'row' of letters and then incorporating them into the lesson and all future lessons.
I loved the little culture clips! It really helped me to better understand why some things I found odd were used that way.

This was one of the first books I bought when I decided I wanted to learn Japanese. It's perfect. If you're a complete beginner, this book takes you through the bare basics and really helps you progress quickly. Everything is broken down into lessons, and every lesson into more clumps. I first learned about JFZ from Mr. Trombley's youtube videos, and since I liked the way he talked about Japanese I decided to give his textbooks a shot. It was definitely a good choice. The method used in this book is definitely effective, and I have learned a lot with it, and leaning also on the video explanations he made on youtube that go hand in hand with the book. This book is great and almost works in conjunction with my school text. It is helping me to learn new things, but also build on what I've learned in class.
Living in Japan has its own struggles as you have to learn the language that its native people are speaking in. Japanese is hard. From as simple as hiragana to kanji, they're way too much of them are too hard for a beginner. Grammar makes no sense to a non-native speaker sometimes and this book helps you with it. I'm new to Japanese and decided to start with this book. It's a pretty solid foundation to start with if you practice regularly. Highly recommend for people that know nothing about the language. #2 is on its way.
An amazing book for beginners. The book is really user friendly and it is now accompanied with videos on YouTube which follows the lessons in the book.

Has a few typos, which can be troubling for a book of this type. Other than that, it was very helpful and easy to follow. Really recommend it for anyone who wants to get into japanese.

I am currently self-learning Japanese. However, I have a regular 9-6 job so finding time to squeeze studying in can be difficult. so if your learning Japanese this is a great way to start. it gets all the basics done but for me i felt it was a little too slow. There wasn't much explanation on grammar so i ended up not using the book as much as i would have liked. it has activities to complete but i just don't think its enough for me?

Very helpful. Just wish there were more sections devoted to the grammar, but what was in the book was very useful considering the somewhat cheap price in comparison to textbooks like Genki.
