Oh, right. There’s some other game coming out too. Infinite Warfare, is it?
I’m exaggerating a bit, but generally, this is more or less how Activision’s dual announcements of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and its “bonus” game, the Modern Warfare remaster have been received by fans. Despite one being a $20 add-on that people have already played, while the other is a 100% new title in the series, it's Modern Warfare that seems to have fans the most excited. Infinite Warfare is being treated like…the troll under the bridge you must pay to get to what you’re looking for on the other side.
Why such a lopsided reception? There are a few factors at play here.
The first is the general fatigue for the “future shooter,” a genre which Call of Duty has bathing in for a good long while now. Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 were already edging into future-tech year ago, but the last three releases in the series have been flat out sci-fi from start to finish, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Black Ops 3. Now, Infinite Warfare is moving things to a new level, as a huge chunk of the game, if not the majority, takes place literally in outer space.
I’ve previously said that after so many years of these future shooters, many fans are longing to return to present day or the past. I could have sworn that Infinity Ward would produce a WWII new-gen title this year, but instead they’ve gone the opposite direction. Now, Call of Duty is practically Halo, and we’re now fighting robots or aliens or space mercenaries, or I’m not even sure what else out in space. This is why the footage shown from the game, which looks incredibly similar to Ghosts, AW and BO3, is hard to get terribly excited about.
And then there’s the appeal of Modern Warfare.
I’ve always said that a reason that we haven’t seen any Call of Duty remasters is because Activision has to know how much it would detract from their “actual” COD release that year. What happens when you release say, Advanced Warfare and Modern Warfare remastered in the same year, even months apart? You cannibalize yourself, and sap interest in your new franchises by relying on old hits.
Now, Activision has done something that might either be genius or madness, depending on how it goes over. They’ve essentially made the Modern Warfare remaster the prime selling point of Infinite Warfare, increasing the base price of the game to boot.
You cannot get the Modern Warfare remaster without buying one of Infinite Warfare’s three different bundle packs. It is not sold separately. This is to avoid the situation I laid out above (A $20 classic remaster dramatically outselling a $60 one that looks less interesting), but it does add at least $20 to your total no matter what. If you want Modern Warfare, there is no way you’re paying less than $80, unless you want to sit around and wait an indefinite amount of time until Activision splits them up.
But what is this demonstrating? To me, it shows that Activision knows their brand is getting weaker, and that something like Infinite Warfare almost needs something like the Modern Warfare remaster to prop it up. I do not think a new game diving deeper into sci-fi tech is what the series needs. It either needs to return to an era we haven’t seen in next-gen yet (again, WWII is the obvious choice) or it needs to experiment with something pretty different, maybe going open world, perhaps.
Of course telling Activision that Call of Duty “needs” to do anything is still stupid at this point. A poor selling Call of Duty game is still probably going to be the best-selling game of the year (avoiding any competition from Grand Theft Auto). Games like Ghosts and Advanced Warfare have gotten mixed reactions, yes, yet the series is still the biggest golden goose in the industry.
But the downward trend is there, for the most part. Sales peaked with Modern Warfare 3, and it would be frankly miraculous if they ever reached that point again. This is why we’re seeing things like forcibly bundled remasters to sell a new game to old fans.
I am very curious to see how this plays out this fall, as it’s easy to imagine that given the excitement gap between MW and IW right now, that the remaster may siphon off a significant chunk of players when the two are simultaneously released this fall.
This is all well and good and money in Activision’s pocket (especially since you can’t get MW without IW), but they are going to have to keep players engaged with the series’ new installments, as there are only so many times they’ll be able to play this card. With Ghosts and Advanced Warfare, I don’t think Activision has created memorable sub-series in the COD lexicon. Even Black Ops is starting to blur together with the others. I can’t judge Infinite Warfare until I play it, but suffice to say from the previews, it certainly does look like more of the same. And most would not consider that good news, at this point.
Something just feels weird about all this. It’s too early to say Call of Duty is “in trouble” because of the numbers it still puts up, but something is strange when you’re handcuffing a remaster to a new release not just as a fun bonus, but practically as a selling point. A series that feels the need to do that does come across as a bit lost.
For now, we can only guess what will happen this fall. With a three year development cycle and a less-complicated release than Ghosts, perhaps Infinity Ward will knock Infinite Warfare out of the park. And maybe it can co-exist peacefully with Modern Warfare and the extra cash will let Activision set some new records. But on the surface, all of this does seem more than a little odd, when a nine year-old hit is overshadowing a brand new entry in the series.
